India's Olympic Firsts: A hockey gold in 1948

"Holding a hockey stick is like holding the national flag." Former India striker Jagbir Singh put the sport's unmatched patriotic flavour in the most exquisite way one could think of. The conversation had India's men's hockey gold at the 1948 London Olympics central to it. It was India's fourth consecutive gold in hockey (after 1928, 1932 & 1936 - Editions in 1940 & 1944 were cancelled due to World War II), but the first as an independent nation, playing under the tricolour.
